Apple has not been vocal about its forthcoming smart ring, but based on the latest patent that came out on November 28, 2023, the tech giant has been working on a technology that incorporates near-field communication into its rumored smart ring. But what will it do? Here’s what you need to know about these reported capabilities:

The latest patent granted to Apple by the US Patent and Trademark Office pertains to NFC circuitry used to collect tag information and serve as a controller for Vision Pro, Apple’s mixed-reality headset due for release in early 2024.

As described, the electronic system has a finger-ring housing surrounding a finger-shaped opening. This device may have a coil made from metal stuck on a printed circuit. The NFC circuitry is reportedly using the coil to transmit signals.

One of the possibilities these NFC signals could be used for includes gathering tag information to get a detailed view of the tagged item right through the MR headset and potentially allowing for a video and audio experience.

We may be used to seeing NFC rings for mobile payment, contactless access, and car keys. Having this functionality to support an MR headset is a bit different from what the market is currently offering. With Apple leading the way for this kind of functionality for smart rings, most VR headsets could follow suit.

Another NFC functionality this could be used for includes the exchange of information with paired devices, and the ability to upload information to the web via Wi-Fi or other wireless network.
