Near-field communication technology or NFC is a wireless technology commonly used in smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles, among others. It’s a type of radio frequency identification (RFID), but unlike the latter, NFC is limited to an extremely short range, usually about an inch. When incorporated with smart rings, NFC becomes extremely powerful with several use cases.
NFC rings can be used for sharing and transferring data, making purchases, controlling apps, switching on/off Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, or unlocking doors. When it comes to security, it’s difficult for malicious threats to interfere with data transfers, making NFC smart rings safer than Bluetooth and other wireless technologies.
NFC rings typically don’t need a battery, hence they are also called passive smart rings. But their lifeline is also shorter, typically 2-3 years, compared to other smart rings.

Contactless Payments
You’ve probably used the tap-to-pay with your credit or debit card at one point. This payment method is possible because of NFC and the same method is used with NFC rings for contactless payment. You just move your ring an inch closer to the POS terminal to initiate payments. Some examples of contactless payment rings include the UK’s McLear RingPay 2, Japan’s Evering, and India’s 7 Ring.

Keyless Access
Whether it’s for public transit, home/office access, or car access, some NFC rings are designed for these specific uses.
