Can You Swim With a Smart Ring?

Can you swim with a smart ring
Oura Ring is a water-resistant smart ring that you can take to swimming.

Most smart rings on the market are made from durable materials such as titanium, zirconia, and ceramic. These materials can withstand extreme weather conditions and water pressure. Although many smart rings are made from these materials, not all of them are water-proof or at least water-resistant.

Before diving into which smart rings are waterproof, it’s important to understand that a waterproof smart ring is different from a water-resistant smart ring.

Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant Smart Ring

Waterproof smart rings have the highest level of protection from wet substances, including rain, swimming pools, taps, and showers. The electronics inside the smart ring are typically coated with a thin layer of protection such as PVD (physical vapor deposition), ensuring that water does not seep through the insides of a smart ring.

Meanwhile, water-resistant smart rings have a lower level of protection. Their electronics are still coated but not as well-covered as waterproof smart rings. You may use them in the rain, swimming pool, tap, and showers but to a certain extent only.

Ingress Protection

How do you know the level of protection of these smart rings? Ingress protection or what we simply refer to as IP. Before buying a smart ring, make sure to look at the IP rating of the device. The IP rating typically consists of two numbers—the first number refers to solid particle protection and the second number refers to liquid ingress protection. It’s usually written this way: IPXX.

The highest IP rating is IP68, which means it’s both dust-proof and waterproof up to 1 meter or more. But don’t just look at the rating as device manufacturers normally specify their ratings. For example, some might say their device could be submerged up to 30 meters for 1 hour.
